What Is Esthetics?

What Is Esthetics

Good question. What Is Esthetics? We hear this word thrown about all the time. Sadly even ones are using it in the wrong contexts describing their Instagram. Smh! First, to get that straight, esthetics has nothing to do with or describes anything to do with your Instagram color scheme. It’s even spelled differently. But it’s all good I got you.

Esthetics Definition

So, let me get you the definition. Esthetics from the greek word esthetikos meaning “perceptible to the senses, is a branch of anatomical science that deals with the overall health and well-being of the skin. Anatomical is relating to anatomy or the body structure of organisms.

To put it simply then, esthetics provide preventive care for the skin so it stays healthy and attractive. This is a pretty big deal since the skin is the largest organ of the human body. Now, this could be in the form of cleansing, beautification through makeup, and preserves the health of the skin on the entire body including the neck and face.

Esthetics alludes to the utilization of different procedures to the epidermal layer of the human body. Esthetics covers a wide cluster of procedures that could include steaming, waxing, extraction, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion.

History

Now esthetics isn’t something new. The Egyptians, Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans took care of their skin as well. The Romans were even known for their steam therapy, body scrubs, massage, and physical therapies. I was even lucky enough to visit Pompeii an ancient city in Italy that was destroyed by Mt. Vesuvius. There were elaborate bathing houses and steam rooms. You could still see the beautiful paint and decorations on the walls. They spared no expense in creating that ambiance for their clients.

As for today that is why we have Estheticians. Ones who have decided to take the path and have trained to offer skincare treatments. Esthetics is a very exciting field to embark upon with many opportunities. Ones like, medical aesthetician, makeup artistry, lash artist, and more.
